Homemade Soup

There is an art to cooking soup
on a cold and snowy day
Once I may have thought I had mastered that art
Now I wonder if I have lost the skills
trying too hard to include too much
chopping up and tossing in
every root vegetable I can find
because it seems like the healthy thing to do
not adding too much spice
because a day later it will be even more potent
Maybe it was all a mistake
or maybe my standards have gotten too high
or I was trying too hard to create something
that wasn't meant to be
or maybe I'm just forgetting how delicious it tasted yesterday
And my memory is tainted by life
